Manchester United are prepared to back out of the race to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson if the price becomes too steep, according to reports. The 23-year-old England international is a top target for the Red Devils this summer as they look to replace Casemiro, but they are unwilling to enter a bidding war with Manchester City.
Anderson valued at £120m
Forest, who signed Anderson from Newcastle United for £35 million two years ago, are reportedly demanding £120 million for the player. United consider this price tag vastly inflated and plan to make an initial offer well below that figure. However, if City's interest drives up the cost, United are willing to walk away.
United's recruitment plan
To fund their top midfield target, United hope to generate funds through player sales. Andre Onana, Manuel Ugarte, Marcus Rashford, and Joshua Zirkzee are all available for transfer, while Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia are expected to leave as free agents when their contracts expire.
With Ugarte potentially following Casemiro out the door, United aim to sign two midfielders, a left winger, and a defender in what promises to be a busy summer. Anderson's value could increase further during the World Cup, where he has established himself as a starter for England under Thomas Tuchel.
Anderson's future uncertain
Although Anderson is under contract at Forest until 2029, he may not be keen on dropping to the Championship. Forest currently sit five points above the relegation zone and are not yet safe. Anderson has remained tight-lipped about his future, focusing on the upcoming World Cup with England.
United have alternatives to Anderson, including Premier League stars Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Sandro Tonali, as well as Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. Whoever is signed will need to complement Kobbie Mainoo, who has agreed a new five-year contract with the club.
