Manchester United icon Antonio Valencia has publicly responded with profound sadness following the arrest of his former Ecuadorian international teammate, Christian Lara. The 45-year-old Lara, who played alongside Valencia at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, was recently apprehended by police in Quito for his alleged involvement in an attempted armed robbery at an electronics store.
Details of the Arrest and Alleged Crime
According to reports from Ecuadorian outlet Primicias, Christian Lara was one of four individuals arrested after an attempted robbery at a technology store called Tecnomega in the La Magdalena neighborhood of Quito. Police stated that Lara was found waiting in a vehicle without license plates during the incident.
Ecuadorian police chief Pablo Lastra provided details of the operation, confirming that approximately six armed individuals entered the store with the alleged intention of committing robbery. When officers responded to an emergency call, two suspects inside the shop reportedly fired at police while attempting to flee the scene.
"I can confirm we have apprehended four individuals who allegedly participated in an attempted robbery of a technology store," Lastra stated. "Thanks to the quick response, we managed to foil the crime. We have seized three guns, including a home-made mini-rifle, along with several firearm cartridges and a number of electronic items."Valencia's Emotional Social Media Response
Antonio Valencia, who played for Manchester United from 2009 to 2019 and captained the club during his final season, took to social media to express his feelings about his former teammate's situation.
"I am very saddened by the news about Christian Lara. In the end, nobody knows what's going on with anyone," Valencia wrote. "I ask God to watch over all our hearts, and that Christian (Lara) is in a better situation tomorrow."
The pair first became teammates at Ecuadorian club El Nacional between 2003 and 2005, early in Valencia's professional career. Their footballing partnership continued on the international stage, with both players representing Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Christian Lara's Football Career and World Cup Participation
Christian Lara, nicknamed 'Diablito' during his playing days, earned 28 caps for the Ecuador national team and was part of their historic 2006 World Cup squad. At the tournament, he made two substitute appearances - coming on against Germany in the group stage and again against England in the round of 16.
During his club career, Lara won three Ecuadorian Serie A titles across spells with El Nacional and LDU Quito. He officially retired from professional football in 2018, though he had made brief comebacks from retirement in recent years prior to his arrest.
Official Statements and Recovery of Stolen Goods
Ecuadorian Interior Minister John Reimberg commented on the incident via social media platform X, providing additional details about the police response and items recovered.
"The armed suspects attempted to flee and fired at the officers, leading to a chase and the legitimate use of force," Reimberg stated. "Firearms, a submachine gun, a vehicle, and a cell phone were seized, and evidence from the robbery valued at approximately USD $9,000 was recovered."
The minister confirmed that the case has been turned over to the Prosecutor's Office for legal processing. According to police reports, the assailants had specifically demanded iPhones during the attempted robbery at the electronics store.
Christian Lara remains in custody following his arrest, with the legal process now underway through Ecuador's judicial system. The incident has drawn significant attention in Ecuador due to Lara's status as a former national team player who represented the country on football's biggest stage.
