Liverpool Transfer Target Kees Smit Reveals La Liga Ambition
Liverpool have been linked with numerous players ahead of the summer transfer window, but it now appears that AZ Alkmaar star Kees Smit will not be making a move to Anfield in the near future. The Dutch midfielder has openly admitted his preference for a transfer to Spain, specifically La Liga, despite ongoing interest from the Premier League giants.
Smit's Spanish Dream and Admiration for Barcelona
In an interview with SuperGaande via Mundo Deportivo, the 20-year-old revealed his aspirations. "I really enjoyed watching Barça. I grew up watching Iniesta and Messi, who I consider two of my role models," Smit stated. When asked about his preferred league, he added, "La Liga. Playing there would be amazing. I love the sun, I'm tired of playing in the cold and rain, so I'd like to go play in Spain."
He further emphasized his fondness for Barcelona, saying, "I watch all Barcelona matches. It's simply my favorite club. I love watching Pedri and Frenkie de Jong." This declaration casts doubt on Liverpool's chances of securing his signature, as reports had previously suggested the Reds were leading the race for his services.
Current Situation at AZ Alkmaar and Liverpool's Interest
Despite his La Liga ambitions, Smit has not actively considered leaving AZ Alkmaar. He explained, "I never considered leaving AZ. My dream was to play here my whole life. Ideally, it would be a step to another Dutch team, but I don't think that's going to happen." A product of the AZ academy, Smit has made 69 appearances for the first team, with 38 of those coming this season, where he has scored four goals.
Should a move to Liverpool materialize, Smit would join several compatriots at Anfield, including manager Arne Slot and players like Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Jeremie Frimpong, and Cody Gakpo. However, Liverpool's disappointing season, with the team currently fifth in the Premier League and two points behind Chelsea with eight games remaining, adds complexity to their transfer plans.
Broader Context and Liverpool's Challenges
Liverpool's spot in the Champions League is under threat, and they face crucial matches ahead, including a last-16 clash against Galatasaray and a league game against Brighton. This uncertain sporting future may impact their ability to attract top talent like Smit, who seems more inclined toward a Spanish adventure.
While Smit's comments do not completely rule out a future move to Liverpool, they highlight his strong personal preference for La Liga, potentially dashing the Reds' hopes for this transfer window. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how this situation develops as the summer approaches.
