Frank Lampard Tipped for Sensational Chelsea Return Amid Rosenior Pressure

Frank Lampard, the Chelsea icon and all-time leading goalscorer, is being tipped for a stunning return to Stamford Bridge as pressure mounts on current head coach Liam Rosenior. Lampard has revitalised his managerial reputation by leading Coventry City to the brink of promotion from the Championship, with his side nine points clear at the top.

Lampard's Resurgence at Coventry

Since taking over at Coventry, Lampard has transformed the team's fortunes, putting them on course for a return to the Premier League. This success marks a significant turnaround from his previous stint as Chelsea manager between 2019 and 2021, which included a challenging caretaker role in 2023. At 47, Lampard has gained valuable experience, learning from past mistakes and honing his coaching skills in the competitive second tier.

Rosenior's Struggles at Chelsea

In contrast, Chelsea are enduring a difficult period under Liam Rosenior, who was appointed on a six-year contract in January. The highly-rated 41-year-old has faced intense scrutiny after a nightmare week, which saw Chelsea brutally eliminated from the Champions League 8-2 on aggregate by Paris Saint-Germain, followed by a bruising 3-0 defeat to Everton in the Premier League. These results have amplified calls for a change in leadership at the club.

Nicky Butt Advocates for Lampard's Return

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has publicly suggested that Chelsea should consider re-hiring Lampard. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt argued that Lampard is now better equipped for the role, citing his growth and the challenging circumstances of his first tenure, including a transfer embargo that forced him to rely on young players.

Butt stated: "Do you think if Frank Lampard gets promotion with Coventry they could go back in for Frank? He got the job too early the first time I think and he had the transfer embargo so he had to use a lot of young players. It wouldn’t be a stupid thing to go and get Frank Lampard back in charge of Chelsea for me. He’s done a great job at Coventry."

He added: "He’s got a bit more experience now and he probably made a few mistakes the first time around. People need to understand that transfer embargo means you have to rely on loads of young players, that must have been difficult for him. He would be a totally different manager now. I think Lampard would find it easier working with better players, it would be easier for him to get his messages across to more technical players. If Frank went back into Chelsea, with all the experience he’s got now, I think he would do an amazing job, I really do."

Potential Impact on Chelsea's Future

A return for Lampard could signal a strategic shift for Chelsea, leveraging his legendary status and renewed managerial prowess to stabilise the team. With promotion likely for Coventry, Lampard's stock is at an all-time high, making him an attractive candidate for the Blues as they seek to reverse their current malaise and compete at the highest levels domestically and in Europe.
