Golf star Justin Thomas has openly declared his aspiration to serve as a big-brother figure for Charlie Woods, the teenage son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, despite humorously referring to him as a "little punk." Thomas, a two-time major champion, has cultivated a sibling-like relationship with Tiger over years on the PGA Tour, which has naturally extended to a close connection with the 17-year-old aspiring golfer.
Thomas Offers Mentorship to Charlie Woods
During a recent appearance on 'The Smylie Show' with former PGA professional Smylie Kaufman, Thomas was questioned about whether his dynamic with Charlie resembles a big brother-little brother relationship. "I wanna be if he wants me to be," the 32-year-old athlete stated. "I was very lucky to have some people like that in my life and I know how helpful that was… I wanna help in any way I can."
Thomas praised Charlie's golfing abilities, noting, "The shots that he can hit, a lot of guys on Tour can’t hit. He’s very, very impressive and I’m rooting for the best." He then lightheartedly added, "He’s grown up a lot. He’s still a little punk but not a total punk kid. He can beat me up so I can’t say too much."
Charlie Woods' Recent Golf Challenges
Charlie Woods, who recently committed to play college golf at Florida State University as part of the 2027 recruiting class, faced a difficult week at the prestigious Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in South Carolina. He finished in last place, a significant ten shots behind the nearest competitor in an exclusive field of just 36 players.
Over four rounds, Charlie scored 26-over par, while defending champion Miles Russell secured victory at 15-under. The tournament, often dubbed "the junior Masters" due to its elite status and proximity to Augusta National, has seen past winners like World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Joaquin Niemann go on to successful careers.
Charlie's performance was particularly hampered by a disastrous third round where he carded an 11-over 83, followed by an 80 in the final round. This result marked a sobering experience for the teenager, who is currently ranked 53rd in boys junior golf rankings.
Tiger Woods' Uncertain Masters Participation
Meanwhile, Charlie's father, Tiger Woods, has the golf world speculating about his potential return to competition. The five-time Masters winner hinted he might play at Augusta National in April, despite not competing since the Open Championship in July 2024.
Woods, 50, underwent a seventh back surgery last October and is recovering from a torn Achilles sustained in March 2024. At the Genesis Invitational in February, when asked about playing in the Masters, he responded, "There is." He elaborated, "I'm trying, put it that way. The disc replacement has been one thing. I've had a fused back and now a disc replacement, so it's challenging. And now I entered a new decade, so that number is starting to sink in."
This situation adds a layer of intrigue to the Woods family narrative, as Justin Thomas positions himself as a supportive figure for Charlie during both his developmental challenges and his father's potential comeback.
