Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha scored a 100th-minute winner as Liverpool beat 10-man Newcastle 4-2 in a chaotic Premier League encounter at St James' Park. The result came amid the backdrop of the ongoing transfer saga surrounding Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who was absent from the match as he seeks a move to Anfield.
Newcastle started brightly, with Anthony Gordon causing problems for Liverpool's defence. However, the hosts fell behind in the 35th minute when Ryan Gravenberch's low shot deflected past goalkeeper Nick Pope. Gordon's evening unravelled before half-time when he was sent off for a reckless tackle on Virgil van Dijk, catching the defender on his standing leg.
Liverpool doubled their lead early in the second half through Hugo Ekitiké, who reacted quickest to a rebound after Cody Gakpo's shot was blocked. Newcastle fought back, with substitute Will Osula scoring a late equaliser to make it 2-2. But in the 100th minute, Ngumoha, who had come off the bench, struck the winner for the champions, sparking wild celebrations among the away fans.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said after the match: 'I'm not sure it was a football match today.' The victory keeps Liverpool in contention at the top of the table, while Newcastle will rue Gordon's dismissal and their inability to hold onto a point.
