Kai Havertz has candidly disclosed that his recent knee injury inflicted pain he had never felt before in my life, but the Arsenal forward is now eagerly anticipating a significant role in the club's decisive season finale. The 26-year-old German international has faced a challenging period since sustaining the knee issue during Arsenal's Premier League opener against Manchester United on August 17.
A Grueling Recovery Journey
As previously reported, Havertz was on the verge of returning to matchday squads in November, only to suffer a setback in his final training sessions, delaying his comeback. After further rehabilitation, he made the bench for Arsenal's 4-1 triumph over Aston Villa on December 30. However, his knee flared up again, leading to his exclusion from the next two matches to manage his workload, which raised concerns within the north London club about his long-term fitness.
Overcoming Adversity
Having also recovered from a subsequent hamstring injury, Havertz is now focused on securing a consistent place in the team. He has appeared as a substitute in Arsenal's last two Premier League fixtures and played for 62 minutes in their 2-1 FA Cup victory at Mansfield on Saturday. Ahead of Arsenal's Champions League last-16 first leg against his former club Bayer Leverkusen, Havertz reflected on his ordeal.
I had three injuries in succession, he said. For me, it was particularly tough because I never experienced that level of pain from the knee injury before in my life, and it emerged unexpectedly. He emphasized the mental and physical challenges, noting, Having two surgeries, one after another, is not easy, but I believe I'm professional enough to understand that's sometimes part of football. I'm still young, so I hope to have many years ahead, but mentally, it was undoubtedly tough.
Support and Renewed Hunger
Havertz credited his family for providing crucial support during this difficult time, stating, I tried to navigate through these challenges, and obviously, I received immense support from my family. That assistance was invaluable during that period. Despite being sidelined, he remained engaged with the team, saying, I attempted to support the players off the pitch because I was at the training ground daily and watched them compete in stadium games, which brought me joy.
This experience has ignited a renewed sense of determination in Havertz to make up for lost time. He added, Yes, 100 percent it has given me hunger. I missed it immensely, and that's why it was so mentally challenging for me because I couldn't be involved. It has genuinely provided me with a new hunger. Expressing his enthusiasm, he concluded, Honestly, I'm overjoyed to be back with the team and on the pitch again.
