Pep Guardiola Furious as Carabao Cup Rule Bars Marc Guehi from Arsenal Final
Pep Guardiola has expressed his intense frustration over a Carabao Cup regulation that will see Manchester City defender Marc Guehi ruled out of the upcoming final against Arsenal. The highly anticipated clash is set to take place at Wembley Stadium this Sunday, with both teams vying for the first major trophy of the season.
Guardiola's Outrage Over Ineligibility Rule
The Manchester City manager slammed the EFL's Carabao Cup rules, which have been implemented for the first time this season. These regulations state that if a player is signed after the first leg of the semi-final, they become ineligible to participate in the remainder of the competition. Guehi was acquired from Crystal Palace in January, having already faced Arsenal while playing for the Eagles in the quarter-finals back in December.
Guardiola, who famously won the Carabao Cup four consecutive times, voiced his disapproval back in February. After City secured their place in the final, he publicly criticised the rule, stating he could not "understand" it. He expressed hope that the club would appeal to the EFL to allow the £20 million defender to feature against Arsenal.
City's Unsuccessful Appeals and Defensive Concerns
Despite Guardiola's hopes, Manchester City's appeals were ultimately rejected by the EFL. This leaves the manager without Guehi's services for the crucial final. Compounding City's defensive woes, Josko Gvardiol is also injured, though Guardiola can still call upon Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake, and Abdukodir Khusanov.
The absence of Guehi adds another layer of challenge for City, who are already dealing with the psychological impact of a midweek Champions League exit. They suffered a crushing last-16 defeat to Real Madrid, while Arsenal advanced to the quarter-finals.
High-Stakes Final Amid Premier League Title Race
This Carabao Cup final is particularly significant as it pits two clubs also locked in a fierce Premier League title battle. Arsenal currently lead the race by nine points, making Sunday's match a tantalising preview of their ongoing rivalry. Guardiola last lifted the Carabao Cup in 2021, whereas Arsenal's most recent triumph in the competition dates back to 1993.
For Mikel Arteta, this final represents an opportunity to secure his second piece of silverware as Arsenal manager, having previously won the FA Cup in his inaugural season. The stage is set for a dramatic encounter, with Guardiola's frustration over the Guehi rule adding extra intrigue to the buildup.
