Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed that Matheus Cunha could make his comeback in Sunday's huge showdown against bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Brazilian forward missed Monday's victory over Brentford with a hip flexor complaint but has returned to training at Carrington this week.
Cunha in Contention
United are optimistic that Cunha will be part of the squad for the blockbuster fixture. Carrick said: "Matheus has done a little bit of work so we're hopeful. We're not sure, but we're hopeful." The 44-year-old also confirmed that Luke Shaw hobbled off against Brentford but offered no specific update, while Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined with a back issue and is the only player definitely unavailable.
Champions League Race
United's win over Brentford moved them within one victory of securing a return to the Champions League. Sunday's match is a third-versus-fourth showdown, with United holding a three-point cushion over Liverpool. Carrick is relishing his first United clash against Liverpool as manager, having previously enjoyed the fixture as a player.
"One of my favourite games, without doubt," Carrick said. "It's a standout game, there are big games and big rivalries we have with other teams but this is right up there. The history, ups and downs, excitement, entertainment and emotion makes it a really special game."
United are chasing a Premier League double over Arne Slot's side after a 2-1 triumph at Anfield earlier in the campaign. Carrick added: "It shows the improvements of the group and getting stronger to be coming into this game in such a good position. We're fully aware of the situation in the league and how close it is."
Kick-off at Old Trafford is scheduled for 4:30 PM BST on Sunday.
