Violent Scenes Mar FA Vase Match as Players Confront Supporters
Police have launched an investigation after a mass brawl erupted at the conclusion of a non-league football match, with shocking footage showing players jumping into the stands to engage in physical altercations with spectators.
Chaos Unfolds at Bilston Town Ground
The unsavoury incident occurred following the FA Vase fifth-round tie between home side Bilston Town and Droylsden FC, which the visitors won 2-0 to advance to the quarter-finals, just two rounds from a potential Wembley final. West Midlands Police were called to Queen Street at approximately 5pm on Saturday following reports of people being attacked.
Disturbing videos circulating on social media depict one player throwing punches at supporters as a woman attempts to restrain him. In another clip, a member of coaching staff appears to be chased across the pitch before striking a non-player, who subsequently falls to the ground.
Police Statement and Club Responses
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police confirmed: "We're investigating after a violent disorder at Bilston Town Football Club. We were called to reports of people being attacked at around 5pm. No arrests have yet been made."
The statement continued: "We are working to establish the full facts and will be contacting the victims to get full statements, and will be reviewing mobile phone and CCTV footage. Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch with us on 101, quoting 20/139817/26."
Bilston Town released an official statement acknowledging the incident: "We understand that there is a video or videos shared by people from the game today. We would like to state that this is not a fair reflection of the game or day as a whole. As a club we are in the process of investigating all footage from today's game."
The club added: "We would like to thank the supporters of Droylsden FC for their cooperation."
Contrasting Post-Match Communications
Interestingly, Droylsden's initial post-match communication made no reference to the violent scenes. Instead, they posted on social media: "THANK YOU! Many thanks to Bilston Town FC for their hospitality, and all the best for the rest of the season. To all you Bloods who made the trip down, THANK YOU for your tremendous support, and safe journeys home!"
Both clubs have been approached for further comment regarding the investigation. Bilston Town compete in the Midland League Division One, while Droylsden participate in the North West Counties League Division One North.
The FA Vase represents a significant opportunity for non-league clubs, with the winner earning a prestigious trip to Wembley Stadium for the final. This incident casts a shadow over what should have been a celebratory occasion for Droylsden following their victory.
