Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has pointed to the exemplary attitude of on-loan Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, in a stark contrast to the situation surrounding want-away teenage star Dro Fernandez.
Flick's Stark Message on Commitment
The German coach made his feelings abundantly clear during a press conference ahead of Sunday's fixture against Real Sociedad. The briefing was dominated by news that 18-year-old midfielder Dro Fernandez had shocked the Catalan club by submitting a formal transfer request.
Flick, visibly frustrated, used the platform to outline the non-negotiable commitment he expects from anyone wearing the famous Blaugrana shirt. He explicitly highlighted Rashford, who is midway through a season-long loan from Old Trafford, as the gold standard.
"We are Barca and we are one of the best teams in the world," Flick stated. "If you want to play with Barça, then it has to be 100 per cent with your whole heart. These colours, you have to live for them. All the others, I don't want."
The Fernandez Shock Exit
The backdrop to Flick's strong words is the unexpected departure of Fernandez. The highly-rated teenager, who joined Barcelona's academy at age 14 in 2022, has reportedly taken the drastic step of activating his own release clause worth €6million (£5.1m) to force a move this January.
Fernandez, often compared to teammates like Pedri, made his first-team debut under Flick earlier this season and provided an assist in a 6-1 Champions League win over Olympiacos in October. Despite making five appearances, his desire to leave has left the club hierarchy stunned.
Paris Saint-Germain are now frontrunners for his signature, with Manchester City, Chelsea, and Borussia Dortmund also monitoring the situation. When pressed on the matter, a clearly agitated Flick struggled to contain his disappointment.
"Sometimes it's like that... you do not agree with what they are doing, but they are 18, they are old enough to make decisions," he bemoaned, before cutting off his answer with a terse, "no, I don't want to talk anymore, it's enough."
Rashford's Loan Impresses Flick
In direct opposition to the Fernandez saga, Marcus Rashford's stint at the Camp Nou is being viewed as a resounding success. Flick praised the England international's performances and, more importantly, his desire to be at the club.
"For me, of course with Marcus we have a player on the top level... and what I appreciate a lot from him [is his desire to be here]," Flick explained. His comments will fuel speculation that Barcelona will attempt to make the move permanent when the loan concludes.
However, the manager deferred any concrete decisions to sporting director Deco, noting, "Marcus' performances have been really good until now... but it's Deco's job to do things for next season. We have to wait. We have months to go."
The episode has thrown a spotlight on the contrasting mindsets within a top football club. Flick's public stance serves as a powerful reminder to La Masia graduates and established stars alike: at Barcelona, talent must be matched by unwavering dedication.
