Australian F1 Star's Unflappable Nature Unchanged by Hollywood Encounter
The famously composed Australian Formula One driver Oscar Piastri maintained his characteristically laid-back demeanour even when standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt during filming of the 2025 Formula One movie, according to revelations from his mother Nicole.
Authentic Filming During Real Race Weekends
The high-profile film project, released in 2025, starred Brad Pitt as a veteran Formula One driver emerging from retirement to mentor a rising young talent while competing for the fictional APXGP team. The production utilised actual Formula One race weekends to capture authentic footage, blending real drivers, teams and circuits with the fictional narrative to create a genuine insider perspective on the sport.
Significant portions of filming occurred during the 2023 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where the production team leveraged the real race weekend to shoot scenes featuring Pitt's fictional team both on the grid and track. Pitt and co-star Damson Idris were positioned alongside genuine Formula One drivers during the national anthem ceremony before the race, placing the actors beside established stars including Australian driver Oscar Piastri.
Piastri's Characteristic Composure Remains Unshaken
Piastri has become renowned within Formula One circles for his exceptionally calm, composed demeanour and characteristically dry sense of humour. The young driver rarely displays strong public emotion, typically responding to significant moments with understated, matter-of-fact reactions that have become his trademark.
Despite clear photographic and video evidence showing Piastri positioned directly beside Brad Pitt during filming sequences, the Australian driver maintained he hadn't actually spoken with the Hollywood icon during production. His mother Nicole recently revealed this characteristic laconic nature extended to the entire Pitt encounter during an interview with News Corp.
'We watched the F1 movie together, and he made absolutely no mention of that particular scene where he's clearly standing right next to Brad Pitt in the driver lineup during the national anthem,' Nicole explained. 'When I spoke to him afterwards, I said, 'I know you've actually met Brad Pitt now.' He responded, 'I'm pretty sure I haven't.' I told him, 'Mate, I literally saw you. I saw him standing right there beside you.' He just said, 'Ah, yeah. Well, I didn't actually talk to him though.' When I asked why not, he simply responded, 'What are you going to say to that old guy?''
Nicole concluded this interaction demonstrated that professional fame and Hollywood encounters have not altered her son's fundamental personality in the slightest.
Early Racing Passion Overcame Parental Concerns
Despite his characteristically calm public persona, Piastri was consistently drawn toward the high-octane excitement of fast cars from an early age. His mother Nicole, expressing natural parental concern, attempted to discourage this dangerous passion but ultimately found the attraction irresistible given his family background.
'I tried really hard to put a stop to it initially, but there was simply no stopping his enthusiasm,' Nicole recalled. 'Both his grandparents worked as mechanics, and his father Chris operates a car tuning business, so automotive passion was essentially embedded in his DNA from a very young age.'
Nicole made another concerted effort to halt his racing activities while he was still a schoolboy at Brighton, particularly after he was selected to represent Australia internationally. 'He held an academic scholarship, and the school administration was constantly questioning me about his whereabouts while he was travelling for go-karting competitions,' she explained.
'I eventually negotiated a compromise with his father Chris, agreeing he could continue competing but only if he demonstrated genuine promise. If he didn't achieve meaningful results, we would cease the extensive travel and limit his racing to local track events for recreational purposes only. I genuinely believed this arrangement would naturally conclude his competitive aspirations.'
Against-the-Odds Success Accelerated Career
The young Piastri immediately defied expectations during his first major international competition, overcoming numerous significant obstacles that would have discouraged most aspiring racers.
'Everything seemed stacked against him during that crucial event,' Nicole remembered. 'He had never previously raced those specific go-karts, was suffering from substantial jet lag, and couldn't even communicate effectively with his assigned mechanic, who was an older gentleman speaking no English whatsoever. To compound these challenges, the team had carefully preserved one special set of tires specifically for the race, only to have them stolen the night before the competition.'
Despite these considerable disadvantages, the young Australian driver remarkably secured third place in the competition, a result that immediately accelerated his racing career trajectory. 'That unexpected podium finish essentially fast-tracked everything that followed in his professional journey,' Nicole concluded, acknowledging how her son's early determination and talent overcame both parental concerns and practical obstacles on his path to Formula One stardom.
