Former Celtic striker Anthony Stokes has made a dramatic return to football, signing for Conor McGregor's pub team just months after serving a 10-month sentence for drug-related offences.
The 35-year-old Irish forward, who once starred for Celtic and Hibernian, is set to lace up his boots again for McGregor's 'The Black Forge Inn' team in Dublin. This marks an unexpected comeback for the troubled footballer, whose career has been derailed by legal issues in recent years.
A Fallen Star's Redemption?
Stokes, who scored 76 goals in 189 appearances for Celtic between 2010 and 2016, saw his career nosedive following multiple brushes with the law. His most recent conviction stemmed from a drug possession charge that saw him jailed earlier this year.
The surprise move to McGregor's team represents a potential lifeline for the former Republic of Ireland international, whose professional career appeared to be over after stints in Iran, Turkey and Greece failed to reignite his form.
McGregor's Sporting Ventures Expand
For UFC superstar McGregor, this represents another foray into football ownership. The Black Forge Inn team plays in the Leinster Senior League, and McGregor has been actively involved in developing the side since purchasing the pub in 2019.
"Anthony brings experience and quality to our squad," said a team spokesperson. "We believe in second chances and are excited to see what he can bring to the pitch."
Football analysts suggest this could be Stokes' last chance to prove he still has something to offer the game he once graced at the highest levels.
