England Under-21 international Jonathan Rowe has been temporarily suspended from Marseille's first team alongside teammate Adrien Rabiot following a reported clash after their Ligue 1 opener against Rennes. The incident occurred in the dressing room after Marseille's 1-0 defeat, where Ludovic Blas scored a late winner for the 10-man visitors.
According to RMC Sport, tempers flared after the match, with Rowe and Rabiot at the centre of heated discussions. Staff and teammates were forced to intervene. Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi subsequently banned the pair from first-team training on Monday. Both players may also be required to make donations to the club's foundation, though their suspensions are expected to be lifted before the next league fixture.
Rowe, who joined Marseille permanently from Norwich City this summer, had a strong start to the summer, scoring the winner for England Under-21s in their European Championship final victory over Germany. However, his first league game since his permanent switch proved disappointing as Marseille dominated possession but failed to convert chances.
Rowe is one of three English players to make permanent moves to Marseille this summer, alongside Angel Gomes and CJ Egan-Riley. Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who top-scored for the club last season, remains at the Stade Velodrome and is expected to make his international debut for Jamaica after switching national teams.
