Bryce Huff Announces Surprise NFL Retirement at Age 27

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Bryce Huff has made the stunning announcement that he is retiring from the National Football League after a six-year professional career. The 27-year-old athlete revealed his decision to hang up his cleats in a heartfelt video statement posted to his Instagram account on Thursday.

A Career Spanning Multiple Teams

Huff entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020, initially signing with the New York Jets where he spent his first four NFL seasons. During his tenure with the Jets, Huff appeared in 54 games with seven starts, accumulating impressive statistics including 17.5 sacks, 65 tackles, and 43 quarterback hits.

Following the 2023 season, Huff departed the Jets to sign a three-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Although he did not suit up for their championship victory, Huff earned a Super Bowl LIX ring with the Eagles during their 40-22 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Most recently, Huff was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a conditional draft pick. During his single season with the Niners, he played in 15 games with eight starts, recording four sacks, 30 tackles, and two forced fumbles.

Emotional Farewell to Football

In his retirement announcement video, Huff reflected emotionally on his lifelong connection to the sport. "I'm retiring from football," Huff declared. "I started playing football when I was four years old. Growing up, I wasn't the biggest or the strongest, and I didn't have many friends. All I really had was the game. Football kept me grounded. It gave me something to hold onto."

The defensive standout continued, "We battled through injuries, fought our way into the playoffs, and gave everything we had. Through all of it, I realized something. Football has been my entire life. I've played ever since I was four years old, but at 27 years old, I know I'm capable of giving the world more than just football."

Huff expressed gratitude for the lessons learned through his athletic career, stating, "The game taught me perseverance, it taught me discipline, it taught me how to lead and how to find a way forward when things feel impossible. Now it's time for the next chapter of my life."

Launching a New Business Venture

Huff revealed that his retirement coincides with the launch of Neighborstone, a new company focused on lithium-ion battery technology. The athlete, who is in the physical prime of his career, expressed eagerness to pursue this entrepreneurial endeavor away from the football field.

His departure creates significant financial implications for the 49ers, who will save $5.4 million in 2026 salary-cap space as a result of his retirement.

49ers Respond with Roster Move

Shortly after Huff's announcement, reports emerged that the San Francisco 49ers are bringing back linebacker Dre Greenlaw for a second stint with the team. According to NFL Network, the organization has agreed to a one-year contract worth $7.5 million with their former defensive star.

Greenlaw was an integral component of San Francisco's defense from 2019 through 2024, forming one of the league's most formidable linebacker duos alongside Fred Warner during that period. However, his career was interrupted when he ruptured his Achilles tendon while running onto the field during the Super Bowl following the 2023 season, causing him to miss nearly the entire 2024 campaign.

The linebacker had left San Francisco last offseason to sign a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos. Denver released him earlier this week after just one season, during which he was limited to only eight games due to persistent injury concerns.
