Blitz Golf: The High-Octane Answer to T20 Cricket Arrives in England

A new, fast-paced golf format, billed as the sport's direct response to the explosive popularity of T20 cricket, is poised to make its British debut this year. Organisers of Blitz Golf are aiming to captivate a fresh generation of fans with this high-energy spectacle, which has already gained significant traction in Australia.

Rapid-Fire Showdowns Across England

Blitz Golf will roll out four distinct events across England this June. The format condenses the action into a thrilling three-hour window, a stark contrast to traditional four-day tournaments. Each event will feature a 10-hole showdown involving a mix of professional golfers, renowned sports stars, celebrities, and social media influencers.

The competition structure is designed for maximum drama. It begins with 24 players competing in an initial six-hole shotgun round. The field is then cut to 12 for a three-hole phase, culminating in a final four-player, one-hole shootout where scores reset, creating a winner-takes-all finale on a specially designed 'stadium hole'.

"We're a proper outdoor golf product that's done and dusted in three hours," said Blitz Golf CEO Simon Zybek in an interview. "It still ticks the boxes for golf purists – real courses, real competition – but we layer celebrities and influencers into the mix. It opens up a whole new world of fans."

Festival Atmosphere and Global Ambitions

Beyond the golf itself, the events promise a vibrant festival-style atmosphere. This will include:

  • Live DJ sets and musical performances
  • Interactive fan zones and mid-round player interviews
  • Spectators allowed to roam the fairways and engage directly with competitors

Zybek emphasised the unique appeal, stating, "It's super-engaging and poles apart from what you see on the PGA Tour or LIV Golf."

Since its 2018 launch, Blitz Golf has cultivated a strong following in Australia, attracting crowds of up to 10,000 per event. High-profile participants like Australian cricketers Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell have teed off alongside tour professionals, significantly boosting its profile.

The entry lists for the English events are scheduled for announcement at the end of March, with expectations of an Ashes-style rivalry between Australian and British professionals.

Expansion and Event Schedule

Zybek, who comes from a basketball background, conceived the format out of frustration with the time commitment of traditional golf. "Watching a traditional golf tournament is a massive time commitment. Lots of people who loved Blitz Golf in Australia wouldn't go near a normal event," he explained.

England represents a strategic launchpad for global expansion. "England is one of golf's spiritual homes. Bringing Blitz here is a landmark step for our global series," Zybek noted. The plan includes six UK events next year, with subsequent launches in the United States and continental Europe. The ambition is to host 24 events worldwide by 2028, culminating in a grand world final.

The inaugural English series will feature three Sunday afternoon events:

  1. Leeds Golf Centre on June 14
  2. Gaudet Luce in the West Midlands on June 21
  3. Lincoln Golf Club on June 28

A twilight event is also scheduled at Bush Hill Park Golf Club in London, offering a unique evening spectacle for fans.
