Barcelona Fan's Epic Mix-Up: Wrong St James Park for Champions League
In a bizarre football blunder that has captured global attention, a Barcelona fan mistakenly traveled to Exeter City's modest St James Park stadium instead of Newcastle United's iconic St James' Park, missing a Champions League clash for a third-tier match.
A Devastating Discovery
On Tuesday, the supporter, believed to be in his late-20s or early-30s and with limited English, arrived at Exeter's ground with a ticket for the Newcastle vs Barcelona game. Adam Spencer, Exeter City's supporter experience officer, described the scene: "He looked absolutely devastated," Spencer recounted. "He had a dishevelled look on his face. I could tell he had been through the wringer."
The fan reportedly told staff he had taken a train from London and walked straight to the turnstile, only to be met with confusion. Spencer explained the mistake gently, offering him a complimentary seat for Exeter's League One match against Lincoln City. "I put him in a nice seat in the main stand," Spencer said. "I thought, well, he's closer to the pitch here than he would be in Newcastle, and we've got no VAR so I thought he may have had a better night actually."
The Great Escape and Aftermath
Despite the gesture, the fan slipped away by the second half, leaving his whereabouts unknown. Spencer speculated he might have gone to watch the Barcelona game on TV or drown his sorrows. The story has since gone viral, with an opticians and a betting company attempting to track him down for publicity.
Spencer believes the mix-up stemmed from a simple error: "My guess would be he's put St James Park in his phone. The railway station right next to the station here has the same name. And off he trots." The two stadiums are 366 miles apart, with Newcastle's holding over 50,000 fans compared to Exeter's capacity of under 10,000.
Scepticism and Sympathy
While some fans have expressed scepticism about the tale, Spencer defended its plausibility, citing the fan's language barrier. He also noted he didn't take a photo due to the supporter's embarrassment. Neil Le Milliere, a board member of Exeter's supporters' trust, praised the club's response: "It's typical of our club to sort out someone like that."
Interestingly, both clubs are fan-owned, adding a quirky link. Veteran Exeter fan Clive Edmonds-Brown joked: "The poor chap's heart must have sunk. It's a shame he didn't bring the Barcelona team with him." Another supporter, Karen Blundell, pointed out the visual clues: "I am surprised he didn't see all the home fans in red and white rather than the black and white of Newcastle United. Bit of a schoolboy error."
A Twist of Fate
In a ironic twist, Spencer revealed he had his own mishap in Barcelona recently, getting lost on the way to the Nou Camp. "I got on the wrong tube. I messed up but obviously not as much as him. I didn't end up in northern Spain," he quipped. This story highlights the unpredictable nature of football fandom and the kindness that can emerge from confusion.
