Tom Aspinall Eyes UFC Return After Double Eye Surgery Recovery
Aspinall Targets UFC Comeback Following Eye Surgery

UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has issued a significant update regarding his fighting future, confirming he is steadily progressing towards a return to competition following a complex double eye surgery. The British fighter has been absent from the octagon since his controversial title defence against Ciryl Gane last October, which ended abruptly due to an eye poke incident.

Aspinall's Road to Recovery

The ill-fated bout with Gane was declared a no-contest after the French fighter inadvertently poked Aspinall in the eyes, forcing medical intervention and subsequent surgical procedures on both eyes. Despite these complications, Aspinall has resumed training activities and maintains optimism about competing before the conclusion of 2026.

Medical Progress and Training Resumption

During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Aspinall expressed cautious confidence about his recovery timeline. "I hope so, I think so," he stated when questioned about a potential return this year. "Medical professionals are indicating everything is moving in the right direction and improving rapidly. There was a period of uncertainty due to some complications, but currently all aspects are progressing well, and I'm feeling substantially better."

Aspinall emphasized the noticeable improvement in his vision, explaining, "Vision is something you utilize constantly—every second of every day. I can genuinely perceive the difference in how my vision functions, and I'm feeling very positive about the situation at this moment."

Future Opponents and Division Landscape

Upon receiving medical clearance, Aspinall is scheduled to face the victor of the interim title clash between Ciryl Gane and Alex Pereira, which is booked as the co-main event on the UFC's White House card. Regarding this matchup, Aspinall commented, "Realistically, who else is available to fight? The heavyweight division currently lacks depth. There aren't numerous significant fights to arrange, so the organization must proceed with available options. Naturally, I intend to challenge the winner of that contest."

Waiting for Medical Clearance

The champion detailed his current status, noting, "I'm presently awaiting the green light—official medical clearance from doctors to recommence proper training. Once we can initiate full-contact training in the gym, we will immediately schedule a fight date against the winner. I'm simply waiting for medical authorization, after which we will notify the UFC and arrange a bout as swiftly as possible."

Support for Jon Jones

In related developments, Aspinall publicly defended former champion Jon Jones, who has demanded release from the UFC following collapsed negotiations concerning the White House card. Aspinall argued, "This perspective might surprise many listeners, but why isn't the UFC providing Jon with the financial respect he merits? That seems unreasonable to me."

He continued, "If any athlete deserves substantial compensation in this sport, it should be Jon Jones based on his accomplishments. This is my opinion despite our historical interactions. They previously offered him thirty million dollars to compete against me. Why hasn't that offer been renewed? I find it perplexing. These athletes have generated revenue for over a decade. They deserve appropriate compensation, in my view."

Aspinall's comments highlight ongoing tensions within the UFC regarding fighter compensation and contractual negotiations, adding another layer to the evolving narrative of the heavyweight division as he prepares for his anticipated return to championship competition.
