Ashley Cole's Frustration Over Managerial Chances Revealed

Ashley Cole exhibited signs of frustration due to a scarcity of managerial openings in English football prior to his relocation to Italy, as disclosed by one of his closest confidants. The former England international has been named as the head coach of Cesena in Serie B until the conclusion of the season, marking his inaugural venture into a primary managerial role.

Cole's Coaching Journey and Recent Appointment

Cole has accumulated coaching experience with Birmingham City and Everton, while also serving as an assistant under Lee Carsley for the England Under-21s over the past five years. The 45-year-old is not participating in the current camp, which includes qualifiers against Andorra and Moldova. Carsley asserted that this transition has been anticipated for an extended period.

Carsley's Insights on Cole's Ambitions

'He's desperate to have his own team and to really have a go at doing it,' Carsley remarked. 'I've probably seen a little bit of frustration at times from him, not getting the opportunities that he probably can see other people getting.'

'It's brilliant that he's got the chance to manage. I speak to him most days, and he's so excited and enthusiastic about the opportunity.'

'He’s had some good jobs but to get that chance as a head coach, he’s probably had to wait that little bit longer. He's done the hard yards. He’s really committed to being a manager.'

Celebrating Past Successes

Ashley Cole and Lee Carsley, alongside goalkeeping coach Tim Dittmer and senior performance analyst James Ryder, celebrated the Under-21 Euros victory last summer. This triumph underscored their collaborative efforts and Cole's dedication to coaching at an elite level.

The Challenge for Homegrown Coaches

Carsley also indicated that an FA initiative to advance more homegrown coaches – communicated when Thomas Tuchel signed a new contract last month – can only yield positive outcomes. Presently, Eddie Howe, Liam Rosenior, and Michael Carrick are the sole English coaches in the Premier League.

'You can count on one hand the amount of English managers who are currently in any of the top leagues,' Carsley added.

'It’s always the intention to have a homegrown coach to lead the national team. The more opportunity we can get in the Premier League and the top leagues… it’s very difficult if we’ve not got a lot to choose from.'

'We have to make sure we don’t look out of the window at what’s out there too much and remember to back ourselves.'
