Arsenal Under Fire After Carabao Cup Final Defeat to Manchester City

Arsenal have come under intense criticism following their recent 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium. The Gunners' offensive weaknesses were starkly highlighted, bringing their title challenges across four competitions to a disappointing end. Mikel Arteta's side struggled in the second half, failing to mount a significant threat, which has raised questions about their tactical approach and player form ahead of a crucial phase in the season.

Psychological Impact and Upcoming Fixtures

After the international break, Arsenal must regroup to prevent this psychological blow from derailing their Premier League title charge. Currently, they hold a nine-point lead over Manchester City in the table and have a favourable Champions League quarter-final draw against Sporting CP. Their next match is an FA Cup quarter-final visit to Southampton, adding pressure to bounce back quickly.

Declan Rice Transfer Issue Emerges

Former England and Tottenham midfielder Chris Waddle has questioned Arsenal's potential move for Sandro Tonali, given their existing squad depth. The Gunners were heavily linked with Tonali in January after an injury to Mikel Merino, but Newcastle United were unwilling to sell their key player, valued at around £100 million. Waddle argues that Tonali's style is too similar to Declan Rice's, making the transfer unnecessary.

Waddle told FootballTransfers: "They've got Declan Rice and they've got Martin Zubimendi, who's a very good player. But Arsenal seem to collect players. Tonali has had a couple of great seasons, he's got better this season. He's a good age and I'm not surprised there's a lot of clubs interested in him. He's a very economical player, he's a little bit like Declan Rice, let's be honest, he's very consistent with his pass ratio, he's got a good shot and he's got a good engine. In my mind, he's a very similar player to Declan Rice, though. Do Arsenal really need another player like that? I know squads strengthen every year and that's how football moves on."

Bukayo Saka's Struggles Blamed on Arsenal's Style

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has attributed Bukayo Saka's underwhelming season to Arsenal's ineffective build-up play. Saka has managed only nine goal involvements across all competitions so far, a notable drop from last term, and was ineffective in the Carabao Cup final. Scholes argues that Arsenal's obsession with a particular style has left Saka isolated and unable to receive the ball in dangerous areas.

Scholes said on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast: "Their better players just weren't performing. You talk about these forward players not performing but you have to look at your midfield players and your centre-halves, they couldn't get the ball to them. Did you see the bit where Bernardo Silva sprinted out to try to stop it going for a corner? Even when you're playing against it, you don't want to give it away. It's almost like playing against Stoke what we did years ago, sometimes because the throw-ins were that good the manager told us to kick it out for a corner because of [Rory] Delap, because the delivery is not as good. What we're saying is, I think they've become obsessed with it. They've forgotten about the other way that they can actually score goals. They've got good players. You've got Saka who looks lost at the minute because they can't get the ball to him, more than anything, he's got great ability."

Looking Ahead

As Arsenal prepare for their upcoming fixtures, the focus will be on addressing these tactical and personnel issues. The debate over transfer strategy, particularly regarding players like Sandro Tonali, and the need to revitalise key attackers like Bukayo Saka will be crucial in determining their success in the remainder of the season. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see how Arteta's side responds to this period of scrutiny.
