TSA Chaos Nationwide as Government Shutdown Sparks Hours-Long Airport Queues
Airline passengers across the United States, including spring break travelers, are enduring hours-long waits at TSA security checkpoints due to a partial government shutdown. The disruptions have created massive lines at airports from Atlanta to Chicago, with staffing shortages hitting hard as the spring break rush begins.
Widespread Airport Delays and Passenger Frustration
Over the weekend, would-be travelers faced grueling queues in Atlanta, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Houston, with the misery continuing into Monday at Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Officials have directly linked these disruptions to the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which funds the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The shutdown has left approximately 50,000 TSA screeners working without pay, leading to a spike in absences and crippling staffing levels. This has resulted in security lines stretching for hours, with some airports reporting wait times of nearly three hours. Passengers have missed flights and experienced significant delays during peak travel periods.
Political Standoff Over DHS Funding
Democrats refused to include DHS in a recent spending bill, partly due to alleged mismanagement by recently ousted Secretary Kristi Noem. This has triggered a partisan standoff, with House Republicans passing clean DHS funding bills while Senate Democrats demand ICE reforms and separate funding for TSA.
The White House Rapid Response X account shared a news package, stating: 'Democrats need to end this purely political shutdown NOW!' The DHS issued a similar statement, blaming Democrats for the chaos: 'Americans across the country are now feeling the fallout from the RECKLESS Democrat shutdown of DHS.'
The DHS statement continued: 'Travelers are facing TSA lines up to NEARLY 3 HOURS LONG at some major airports, causing missed flights and massive delays during peak travel. This chaos is a direct result of Democrats and their refusal to fund DHS. Their political stunt is forcing patriotic TSA officers to work without pay - leading to financial hardship, absences, and crippling staffing shortages. Enough is enough: stop holding national security and everyday Americans hostage. Democrats must fund DHS NOW.'
Passenger Experiences and Airport Scenes
In Houston on Sunday, one passenger told ABC13: 'We got here at 10AM, my flight was departing at 1:50 and we're not going to make that.' At Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, the security line was so long it snaked into a parking garage outside. Footage emerged online showing passengers hauling luggage through multi-story structures to reach the end of the queue.
At William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, thousands of passengers lined up for hours, with queues extending onto stairways, through multiple concourses, and even into baggage claim areas. Only one security line was open on Sunday morning, exacerbating the delays. By Monday, the airport's X account updated travelers that the TSA PreCheck line had reopened after being closed on Sunday.
Travel Advisory and Broader Context
Airports urged travelers to arrive at least three hours before their flights over the weekend, warning that wait times could last up to two hours. These longer-than-usual delays compounded existing flight disruptions in places like Atlanta due to recent weather issues.
The partial government shutdown entered its third week on Monday, having begun when funding lapsed on February 14. As the political impasse continues, passengers are advised to prepare for ongoing travel chaos at major airports nationwide until a resolution is reached.
