President Donald Trump has unveiled ambitious plans for a new triumphal arch in Washington D.C., featuring a striking golden design with patriotic symbols and inscriptions. The proposal, released on Friday, includes a towering winged figure reminiscent of Lady Liberty, complete with a torch and crown, all finished in gilded detail.
Design and Symbolism of the Proposed Arch
The 12-page plan, detailed by the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, showcases the arch standing 250 feet tall from its base to the tip of the winged figure's torch. Flanking this central statue are two eagles, while four lions stand guard at the base, all adorned in gold. Inscriptions in gold lettering will read "One Nation Under God" and "Liberty and Justice for All" on either side of the monument, emphasizing national unity and values.
Location and Historical Context
The structure is proposed to be situated between the Lincoln Memorial to the east and Arlington National Cemetery toward the west, within a traffic circle connecting Washington with northern Virginia. Trump has argued that Washington is the only major global capital without such a monument, noting that initial efforts to build one were interrupted by the Civil War nearly 200 years ago and again in 1902 without success.
In February, Trump highlighted this historical gap, stating, "It was interrupted by a thing called the Civil War, and so it never got built. Then, they almost built something in 1902, but it never happened." He believes this arch will fill a longstanding void, aligning with similar structures found in other world cities.
The unveiling of these plans marks a significant step in Trump's vision to enhance the capital's landscape with a grand, symbolic edifice. The project, if realized, would add a new landmark to Washington's iconic skyline, blending historical references with contemporary patriotic themes.
