Former President Donald Trump has ignited controversy by sharing a photograph of what he described as a 'loaded' handgun on his Truth Social platform. The post, made on Saturday, directly accused Minneapolis officials of abandoning federal officers during a fatal shooting incident involving a 37-year-old American citizen.
Trump's Social Media Allegations
The image disseminated by Trump depicts a semi-automatic handgun accompanied by additional ammunition. In his accompanying statement, Trump asserted that the weapon belonged to the individual who was shot and killed, emphasising that it was 'loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go.' He used the post to sharply question the absence of local police support for federal agents at the scene.
Questions Over Police Presence
'Where are the local Police? Why weren't they allowed to protect ICE Officers?' Trump wrote in his social media update. He went further, accusing the Mayor of Minneapolis and the Governor of Minnesota of deliberately 'calling them off,' thereby leaving federal officers to defend themselves without local assistance. This accusation forms a central part of his critique of the handling of the situation.
Official Confirmation from Authorities
The Department of Homeland Security has provided confirmation to the Daily Mail regarding the firearm. Officials stated that the gun visible in Trump's posted image was indeed recovered at the scene of the shooting. They also verified that the deceased man was armed at the time of the encounter with law enforcement.
Weapon Secured as Evidence
Following the fatal incident, federal officials have confirmed that the semi-automatic handgun and the accompanying magazines were taken into official custody. This procedural step is standard in such investigations to preserve evidence and facilitate a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The sharing of this image and the accompanying accusations by a prominent political figure has brought significant attention to the incident, raising questions about inter-agency cooperation and public statements regarding ongoing law enforcement matters.
