Democrats Condemn 'Smear' as Trump FBI Seeks Release of Eric Swalwell File
The Trump administration is reportedly pushing to release FBI records related to Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, drawing sharp criticism from Democrats who label it a political smear. This move comes as Swalwell gains momentum in the crowded race to become California's next governor.
Background of the Investigation
The records in question stem from a decade-old FBI investigation into a suspected Chinese agent who had developed relationships with U.S. politicians. According to reports, this individual assisted Swalwell with fundraising activities during that period. However, an FBI official has previously stated that Swalwell was cooperative with the investigation and was not suspected of any wrongdoing. The congressman cut off contact with the woman after speaking to federal authorities.
Political Context and Governor's Race
Eric Swalwell, an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump who served as a congressional manager during Trump's second impeachment trial, has seen his profile rise as the contest for California governor takes shape. The field is highly competitive, with at least eight Democrats, including Swalwell, and two Republicans vying to replace Governor Gavin Newsom.
Recent polling indicates Republicans are leading the race, raising concerns among Democrats about a potential conservative victory. This is because the top two vote-getters in the June primary will advance to the general election in November. A poll commissioned by the state's Democratic party last week showed conservative political commentator Steve Hilton with 16% support and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco with 14%.
Among Democrats, Swalwell, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer are in a dead heat, each garnering support from 10% of surveyed participants. Swalwell has bolstered his campaign by securing endorsements from key forces in California's organized labor movement, including the influential California Teachers Association.
Swalwell's Response and Legal Action
Swalwell has accused the Trump administration of targeting political opponents through this effort. In a statement, he asserted, "The reason Trump is so desperately trying to stop me is not because I'm running for governor of California but because now I'm the favorite. But Donald Trump and Kash Patel do not get to pick the next governor. Californians do."
On Monday, Swalwell's attorneys issued a cease and desist letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, who is reportedly leading the push to release the files. The letter, as reported by The Washington Post, states, "Your attempt to release the file is a transparent attempt to smear him and undermine his campaign for governor of California."
Democratic Backlash and Accusations
Prominent Democrats have joined Swalwell in condemning the administration's actions. Senator Adam Schiff and Congressman Jamie Raskin have been vocal in their criticism. Raskin emphasized in a statement, "The FBI is attempting to smear a sitting U.S. congressman, candidate for governor, and vocal opponent of the president. What the hell does that have to do with law enforcement? This is plain weaponization of the FBI for partisan political purposes."
This controversy highlights ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and its political adversaries, with Democrats framing the release of the Swalwell file as an abuse of power aimed at influencing the electoral process in California.
