Nicola Sturgeon's Raw Emotional Display on ITV's The Assembly
Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon broke down in tears during a powerful television interview, openly discussing the miscarriage she suffered in 2011. The emotional moment occurred on ITV's groundbreaking programme The Assembly, where she described feeling "overwhelmed" when questioned about the baby she lost.
Cathartic Confession on Unique Television Format
Sturgeon revealed that speaking about her personal loss triggered an uncontrollable flood of emotions. "The tears just started to flow and I didn't think I was going to be able to stop," the 55-year-old politician confessed afterwards. She described the experience as profoundly cathartic, particularly because of the programme's unique format featuring interrogators who are autistic, neurodivergent or learning disabled.
The former SNP leader explained that the show's premise - requiring completely honest answers with nothing off limits - created an environment where she could speak without political calculation. "What I took from it was how cathartic it is to open up emotionally to a group of people with no agenda other than hearing honest answers," she said.
Exhaustion and Emotional Release
Following the intense interview, Sturgeon admitted feeling physically and emotionally drained. "I felt exhausted and really drained, but in a good way," she revealed. "It was a genuine rollercoaster of emotions – one minute I'd be laughing and the next, crying."
The politician contrasted this experience with her decades of political interviews, noting that this encounter sparked "more raw emotion in me than I have ever shown on TV before." She emphasised the absence of political spin, describing instead "just raw vulnerability on both sides" of the conversation.
Historical Context and Personal Background
Sturgeon first publicly revealed her miscarriage in 2016, five years after the event occurred. She had lost the baby at age 40 while serving as deputy first minister, during her marriage to former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell. The couple had been preparing to share their pregnancy news when the miscarriage occurred.
The politician reflected on how her professional life had previously constrained her emotional expression. "I am someone who naturally wants to wear my heart on my sleeve," she explained, "but for a long time, my job and the kind of interviews I did meant that I had to be serious and guarded and keep my emotions in check."
Stephen Fry's Parallel Experience
Fellow guest Sir Stephen Fry also appeared on The Assembly and described his own challenging experience with the programme's frank questioning. The actor and presenter admitted being surprised by questions about his sexual preferences within his established sexuality framework.
Fry compared the intensity of The Assembly to his experience on Celebrity Traitors, suggesting the former was even more demanding. "The Assembly puts one under a microscope for real," he observed, contrasting it with the game-based pressure of the reality television programme.
Programme Details and Broadcast Information
The Assembly represents a unique approach to celebrity interviewing, creating space for unusually honest and emotional exchanges. The programme returns to ITV and ITVX on Wednesday 8th April at 10.05pm, continuing its mission to facilitate genuine conversations between public figures and their neurodivergent interviewers.
Sturgeon's appearance marks a significant departure from her typically composed political persona, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the personal struggles behind one of Scotland's most prominent political figures of recent decades.
