Kristi Noem Confronts Impeachment and Criminal Investigation After Congressional Hearings

Kristi Noem, recently ousted as Homeland Security secretary by Donald Trump, is now facing potential impeachment and a criminal investigation. This follows two days of intense bipartisan congressional hearings that scrutinised her tenure, with Democrats leveraging the momentum to demand accountability for alleged misconduct during her 13-month stint at the agency.

Democrats Demand a 'Reckoning' at Homeland Security

Representative Jamie Raskin, the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, emphasised in a statement that efforts to hold the agency accountable must intensify. He told NBC News that a 'reckoning' is necessary to address issues such as the killings of Minneapolis residents, failures by immigration officials to comply with court orders, and allegations of unconstitutional abuses by officers.

Democrats are actively considering impeachment proceedings against Noem, whose final day in office is March 31, aiming to prevent her from holding public office in the future. This move underscores their commitment to ensuring transparency and justice within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Perjury Allegations Over Corey Lewandowski's Role

Senator Richard Blumenthal has called for an investigation into whether Noem committed perjury during her testimony. She stated that her adviser, Corey Lewandowski, did not approve contracts for the agency, but internal DHS records reviewed by ProPublica suggest otherwise. Blumenthal wrote to Noem, citing evidence that Lewandowski personally signed off on several multi-million dollar contracts.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Blumenthal questioned Noem about Lewandowski's involvement, to which she denied any role. However, documents indicate that Lewandowski, as a 'special government employee,' routinely initialled checklists for contracts exceeding $100,000 before they reached Noem for final approval.

Contract Controversies and Spending Scandals

Federal procurement records reveal that DHS approved a $250,000 public affairs contract to American Made Media Company, a firm with ties to Lewandowski. The bidding process for this contract had an unusually tight deadline, requiring bidders to demonstrate a track record of promoting Trump administration policies.

Additionally, Noem has faced criticism for DHS spending $200 million on an advertisement campaign, with $143 million directed to a firm operated by her spokesperson's husband. Donald Trump claimed ignorance of this spending shortly before announcing Noem's departure from the agency.

Legal Implications and Calls for Accountability

Under federal law, making false statements to Congress is a criminal offence. Blumenthal warned Noem in his letter that 'knowingly and willfully' providing false testimony could lead to penalties. He demanded she amend her testimony to clarify Lewandowski's role and explain the basis for her previous statements.

Representative Joe Neguse highlighted that Noem's firing is merely a 'first step' towards accountability. He stressed that if laws were violated, such as procurement or conflict of interest regulations, evidence should be uncovered and prosecutions pursued as appropriate.

The Independent has reached out to DHS for comment, but no response has been provided at this time. As investigations loom, the political fallout from Noem's tenure continues to unfold, with Democrats pushing for a thorough examination of her actions at Homeland Security.
