Jess Phillips Reveals Terrifying Reality Of Being An MP

Labour MP Jess Phillips has spoken candidly about the constant fear she experiences as a politician, a stark contrast to her previous career. The Birmingham Yardley representative, who entered politics to prove that ordinary people could succeed, admitted she never felt scared in her old job but feels it every day as an MP.

In an interview at her family home, Phillips discussed the threats and abuse she receives, particularly on social media. She criticised Donald Trump's travel ban, describing it as 'fucking ridiculous', and addressed criticism that she doesn't care when Muslim countries impose similar bans, insisting that is not the case.

The 35-year-old, who previously managed domestic abuse refuges for Women's Aid, lives with her husband Tom and their two sons. Tom, a former lift engineer, now cares for the family while Phillips works in Westminster half the week. She said her children are largely oblivious to her career, adding that she would no more relocate them to London than to the moon.

Phillips has gained a reputation for speaking her mind, often swearing and mocking colleagues. She recalled telling Diane Abbott to 'fuck off' after Abbott tried to put her down, and said she enjoys taking people on Twitter because she is often 'cleverer and funnier'. Her bluntness extends to her family; she spoke openly about her brother Luke's addiction to heroin and crack, admitting she once thought he was 'lower than the lowest of the low'.
