Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan abruptly halted a press conference on Thursday after a heated exchange with a reporter, insisting on a retraction for claims that she appeared 'disinterested' during a discussion about the CFMEU corruption scandal. The confrontation unfolded when Channel 10 journalist Jess Maggio challenged Allan's response to alleged victims' fears of reporting to police.
Showdown Over CFMEU Corruption Allegations
During the press conference, Premier Allan had advised that victims of the CFMEU corruption scandal should approach law enforcement. Maggio interjected, stating that victims she had spoken to were too scared to go to the authorities due to fears of individuals still controlling the CFMEU, despite no longer being members. She then accused Allan of looking disinterested, sparking the immediate backlash.
Demand for Retraction and Refusal to Proceed
Allan demanded that Maggio retract the comment about her apparent disinterest, firmly stating she would not continue the press conference until the remark was withdrawn. "Can I ask that you retract that last comment," Allan said, cutting off Maggio's attempted apology. She emphasised, "For this press conference to continue, I ask that you retract that last observation. I was merely considering my answer to your question."
When another journalist tried to move on with a different question, Allan remained steadfast, refusing to proceed until the allegation was retracted. She asserted, "I'm not going to stand here and be accused of something I haven't done, and I would ask that you retract. I'm happy to answer other people's questions, but I can't unless I have that very clear statement that this allegation of how I was behaving is retracted."
Allan concluded by indicating she would interpret silence as agreement to the retraction, leaving the press conference in a tense standoff. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between political figures and the media over sensitive issues like union corruption and victim advocacy in Victoria.
