Idaho Mayor Rick Hogaboam Dies After Collapsing at Town Hall Meeting
The newly-elected mayor of Nampa, Idaho's third most populous city, has tragically died shortly after collapsing during a town hall meeting with other regional mayors. Nampa Mayor Rick Hogaboam, aged 47, suffered a sudden medical emergency while speaking at the Wednesday evening gathering, according to the Treasure Valley Partnership (TVP), the coalition of mayors and county commissioners in the region.
Emergency Response and Immediate Efforts
Eagle Mayor Brad Pike, a former firefighter who was seated next to Hogaboam, immediately sprang into action, administering CPR as TVP staff urgently called 911. Paramedics, police officers, and firefighters rushed to the scene, but despite their swift and concerted efforts, nothing could be done to save Mayor Hogaboam. The precise nature of the medical emergency that caused his collapse remains under investigation by authorities.
In a related incident, Caldwell Mayor Eric Philips also required medical attention outside the town hall and was transported away by medics. Philips later expressed his profound grief, stating, 'I'm heartbroken and devastated. From him to go to answering a question, to gone… I started getting a chest pain, got dizzy and laid down. Next thing medics were checking on me and taking vitals.' He added, 'I have a very heavy heart tonight.'
Political Career and Personal Life
Rick Hogaboam, a Republican father-of-five, was sworn in as mayor on January 5 this year after winning the November election decisively with 62.9 percent of the vote. He had a long and distinguished record of public service to the city of Nampa and Canyon County, including roles as:
- Chief of Staff for his predecessor, Mayor Debbie Kling
- Canyon County Clerk
- Nampa Councilman
- Chair for District 3 of the Idaho Association of Counties
- A brief stint as a substitute Idaho State Senator
Mayor Hogaboam is survived by his wife Mimi, five children, and one grandchild. Reports indicate he was the sole provider for his family, adding to the profound loss felt by his loved ones and the community.
Community and Official Reactions
The city of Nampa has publicly requested that the community keep Hogaboam's family and loved ones in their prayers during this incredibly difficult time. City officials stated, 'As we begin to mourn this unbelievable loss, please provide grace while we navigate the loss of not only our Mayor, but also our friend.'
The Treasure Valley Partnership issued heartfelt condolences, praising Hogaboam's dedication and character. In a statement, the coalition said, 'On behalf of every mayor and county commissioner in our Partnership, and of our citizens, we are heartbroken to have lost one of our esteemed colleagues. Rick Hogaboam was an exemplary public servant, a dedicated family man, and a true friend.' They added, 'Our prayers are with Rick's family and the Nampa community at this time.'
Former Mayor Debbie Kling also paid tribute to her successor, describing him as a 'smart, talented leader, who will be greatly missed.' She expressed being 'extremely grieved' by his death and offered her prayers to Hogaboam's 'amazing wife and young family.'
This sudden and tragic event has left the Nampa community and Idaho political circles in mourning, as they remember a committed public figure whose life was cut short just months into his mayoral term.
