The Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester & Region has publicly called on Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to "focus on football" following his recent remarks concerning Israel's military actions in Gaza. The council expressed concerns that such comments could inadvertently stoke antisemitic sentiments within the community.
Guardiola's Humanitarian Stance Sparks Controversy
Guardiola, speaking at a charity event in his hometown of Barcelona last week, voiced support for Palestinian children affected by the conflict. He later reiterated his position during a press conference on Tuesday, stating that the suffering of innocent people in conflicts, including the Middle East, deeply affects him and compels him to speak out.
Community Leaders Issue Stern Warning
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Jewish Representative Council highlighted the need for prominent figures to exercise caution with their words, especially given the global rise in attacks against Jewish individuals. The council accused Guardiola of a "total failure" to show solidarity with Manchester's Jewish community after the tragic terrorist attack at Heaton Park Synagogue in October, which resulted in two fatalities.
The statement read: "We have repeatedly asked for prominent individuals to be mindful about the words they use given how Jewish people have had to endure attacks across the globe. Pep Guardiola is a football manager. Whilst his humanitarian reflections may be well-intentioned, he should focus on football."
Guardiola's Response and Broader Context
Guardiola defended his stance, emphasising his commitment to speaking out against human suffering. He said: "Never, ever in the history of humanity have we had the info in front of our eyes, watching more clearly than now – genocide in Palestine, what happened in Ukraine, what happened in Russia, what happened all around the world, in Sudan, everywhere. It hurts me. If it was the opposite side, it would hurt me. Wanting harm for another country? It hurts me."
The council, however, remains firm in its position, urging Guardiola to be more careful with his future language to mitigate risks faced by the Jewish community. Manchester City has been contacted for comment regarding the council's statement, but no response has been issued at this time.
