Chelsea have taken the initiative in the race to secure the services of Andoni Iraola, having made contact with the Bournemouth manager's representatives. Iraola announced earlier this month that he would step down as Cherries boss at the end of the season, alerting several clubs to his availability.
Iraola's Impressive Reputation
The Spanish tactician has built a stellar reputation through his work with Bournemouth, who currently sit seventh in the Premier League and are in contention for European football with only four matches remaining. Iraola has yet to reveal his next destination, with Chelsea, Athletic Bilbao, Manchester United, and Crystal Palace among the clubs expressing interest.
Chelsea's Managerial Search
Chelsea dismissed Liam Rosenior last week and, like Athletic Club, United, and Palace, will appoint a new manager this summer. Calum McFarlane will continue as interim manager until the season's end, but the BlueCo hierarchy have already taken steps to identify Rosenior's long-term successor, according to football.london. The club is understood to have made informal contact with Iraola's representatives to gauge his interest. The 43-year-old is on a shortlist of candidates, though the recruitment process is still in its early stages.
Iraola's Public Stance
Iraola has already responded publicly to the speculation. When asked if he would be open to speaking with Chelsea, he replied: "No, I think I said it when I announced I was not continuing here. For me, now, it's about Bournemouth. Four games. We have an incredible position, an incredible fight ahead. Past week, you were asking me about other clubs. I don't know exactly which ones, but also, as a sign of respect for Bournemouth, I cannot talk right now about my future because it's not what worries the Bournemouth supporters."
Manchester United's Position
Chelsea have moved more quickly than United, who are reportedly yet to approach potential candidates. The Old Trafford hierarchy, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, are in no rush to decide on a successor to Ruben Amorim. Michael Carrick remains in contention after winning eight and drawing two of his 12 games as interim boss.
Other Potential Destinations
Iraola is also on United's radar, though the vacant position at his boyhood club Athletic Club remains a distinct possibility. However, local reports suggest Edin Terzic is poised to replace Ernesto Valverde. If the former Borussia Dortmund coach secures that role, Iraola could move elsewhere in Spain. Previous reports have indicated that he is keen to return to his home country with his family after three successful seasons at Bournemouth, where he secured 12th and ninth-place finishes before this campaign, despite losing several key players.
Bournemouth's Current Form
The Cherries are unbeaten in their last 14 Premier League matches following a 2-2 draw with Leeds at the weekend. They currently occupy the qualification spot for the Conference League and face Crystal Palace on Sunday, before concluding their season against Fulham, Manchester City, and Nottingham Forest.
