Traditionalist Catholic Group Rejects Vatican Dialogue, Escalating Schism
Catholic Traditionalists Reject Vatican Talks, Deepening Rift

A breakaway traditionalist Catholic organisation has firmly rejected the Holy See's invitation for dialogue, signalling a direct confrontation with Pope Leo XIV. The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) dismissed the Vatican's proposal, which was conditional on suspending planned bishop consecrations, arguing that the threat of sanctions undermines genuine fraternal exchange.

Decades-Long Schism Intensifies

The SSPX, founded in opposition to the modernising reforms of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, has been estranged from Rome since 1988. That year, its founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without papal consent, leading to excommunication and the group's lack of legal status within the Church. Despite this, the SSPX has expanded globally, operating schools, seminaries, and parishes, and now represents a parallel Catholic structure with hundreds of clergy and religious members.

Imminent Consecration Ceremony Sparks Crisis

Earlier this month, the SSPX announced plans to consecrate four new bishops on July 1, citing the need to minister to its growing global faithful, as only two original bishops remain. This move has created the first significant crisis for Pope Leo XIV, who has aimed to ease tensions with traditionalist factions that escalated under his predecessor, Pope Francis. The planned ceremony challenges papal authority directly, drawing attention from both loyal Vatican traditionalists and sympathetic observers.

Vatican's Conditional Offer Rejected

In an attempt to avert the crisis, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, the Vatican's doctrine chief, invited SSPX superior Reverend Davide Pagliarani for talks on February 12. He proposed a theological dialogue on Vatican II, but only if the SSPX suspended the consecration plans. In a letter posted on the SSPX website, Pagliarani rejected this offer, noting that a similar proposal in 2019 received no response. He emphasised that doctrinal agreement is impossible under such conditions, particularly regarding Vatican II, and criticised the Vatican's simultaneous threats of schism and sanctions.

Appeal for Charity Over Doctrine

With doctrinal consensus deemed unattainable, Pagliarani appealed to the Vatican for charity, highlighting the SSPX's role in serving Catholic faithful through sacraments. He argued that the society's existence as an objective reality should be acknowledged, allowing it to continue its spiritual work without interference. The Vatican has not issued an immediate comment on the rejection, leaving the situation unresolved as the July 1 consecration date approaches.
