Angus Taylor's Car Stolen Before Fuel Tax Press Conference
Angus Taylor's Car Stolen Before Fuel Tax Presser

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor faced a chaotic morning after his car was allegedly stolen from his residence, mere hours before he was scheduled to hold a crucial press conference. The incident occurred in Canberra's inner-south, where the vehicle was taken shortly before Taylor's planned appearance at a 7-Eleven service station in Casey on Friday morning.

Press Conference Proceeds Despite Theft

The press conference was a key moment for the Coalition, as they pushed for the government to halve the fuel excise. This policy had been announced by the Albanese government just days earlier, on Monday. Despite the disruption, Taylor arrived at the 8am event without a jacket, even as temperatures lingered around a chilly 10 degrees Celsius.

Rushed Morning and Jacket Mystery

Sources close to the situation revealed to the Daily Mail that Taylor was in a significant rush that morning. This haste may explain why he left his jacket behind, potentially still in the stolen car. Interestingly, Nationals Leader Matt Canavan also appeared without a jacket, possibly in a show of solidarity or to match Taylor's unexpected attire.

Police Investigation and Recovery

ACT Policing confirmed that the vehicle was stolen on March 27. Fortunately, it was recovered later the same afternoon in Turner, a leafy suburb located in the capital's inner-north. Police transported the car to an ACT Policing facility for a thorough forensic examination. Investigations into the alleged theft are actively continuing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Taylor Claims Credit for Fuel Relief

In the aftermath, Angus Taylor has claimed credit for the tax relief measures, which are set to provide significant savings for motorists. The excise cut will see savings of 26.3 cents per litre at the petrol pump, translating to approximately $19 when filling a standard 65-litre tank. Additionally, the heavy vehicle road user charge has been substantially reduced.

'Australian families and small businesses will pay less for fuel because the Coalition led, and the government followed,' Taylor asserted during the press conference.

Delayed Benefits for Consumers

However, Australians should not expect immediate cheaper fuel prices. In some areas, motorists may have to wait until after the Easter long weekend to see the full effects. This delay is due to service stations needing to first sell their existing stock, which was purchased at higher prices, before they can implement the price reductions at the bowser.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers explained the timeline, stating, 'It is about the replenishing of the stocks in the tanks, because it’s applied to the wholesale obviously, the fuel in the tanks right now has been purchased at the higher rate. And so people should expect it would take, you know, somewhere between maybe one and two weeks for the full benefit of the excise to flow through.'
