12 Arrested as 'Unite The Kingdom' Rally Sparks London Clashes

The Metropolitan Police made twelve arrests on Saturday as a 'Unite The Kingdom' rally in central London descended into violent clashes. The far-right group's demonstration, which took place in Whitehall, was met by a significant counter-protest, leading to what police described as 'unacceptable' scenes of violence.

Officers from the Met's Public Order Command were deployed in large numbers to keep the two opposing groups separated. Despite these efforts, skirmishes broke out, requiring police intervention. The force reported that several officers were assaulted during the disorder.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: "Whilst the majority of people have now left the area, we have faced significant aggression from some attendees who have been intent on causing violence and disruption. A number of officers have been assaulted. This is utterly unacceptable."

The 'Unite The Kingdom' group, which has been linked to far-right figures and anti-immigration rhetoric, had promoted the rally online. Their presence drew a swift and vocal response from anti-fascist demonstrators, creating a tense atmosphere in the heart of the UK's government district.

The police confirmed that the twelve arrests were for a variety of offences, including violent disorder, assault on an emergency worker, and possession of an offensive weapon. The incident is now under review, and the force has committed to reviewing body-worn video footage to identify further offenders.
