Trump's $6.9m No-Bid Pool Contract Sparks Controversy

A $6.9 million no-bid contract to paint the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool blue has been awarded to a company with ties to President Donald Trump, sparking claims of favouritism. The contract was given to Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a Virginia-based firm that previously renovated a swimming pool at Trump's golf course in the state. The New York Times reported that the contract was issued on 3 April, despite the company having no prior federal contracts.

The reflecting pool, constructed in 1922, has long suffered from algae growth and leaks. Previous administrations spent millions trying to fix the issue, but Trump has made the pool's appearance a personal project, suggesting a turquoise colour before settling on 'American-flag blue'. The president posted an AI-generated image of himself and officials relaxing in a clear-blue version of the pool.

The administration used a federal contract exemption designed to avoid 'serious injury' to the government to bypass competitive bidding. A White House spokesperson said the project is being completed at 'Trump speed' ahead of the US's 250th anniversary celebrations. Critics argue the process lacks transparency and rewards Trump's associates.

However, experts doubt painting the pool will solve its underlying filtration issues. Tim Auerhahn, chair of the Aquatic Council, said painting won't stop algae growth and noted that Trump's recent motorcade visit may have worsened leaks. 'If it were my project, I'd require an immediate inspection,' he added.
