Kelly Somers Opens Up About Wayne Rooney and World Cup 2026

Kelly Somers, one of Britain's most trusted football broadcasters, remains refreshingly humble despite her achievements. As a BBC Sport presenter, face of Fantasy Premier League, and co-host of The Wayne Rooney Show, she is a busy mum-of-one. Catching up with the Mirror, she was frantically packing for a flight to America to cover the World Cup.

Excitement for the World Cup

“Oh, it’s very exciting,” she says. “It feels like there’s been so much build-up — I’m really looking forward to letting the football take over.” The 35-year-old from Watford relishes the trip, noting the opportunity to travel depending on England's progress. However, she worries about the heat, especially if matches are in Mexico City.

Family Adventure

Kelly’s fiancé Max, their two-year-old daughter, and her mother Jane will join her. “It will be a juggle, but it’s a long time to be away,” she explains. Her daughter was seven months old at Euro 2024 and came to Germany. “We’re embracing it as one big adventure.” They will be based near the England training ground, with parks nearby for the toddler.

Motherhood and Career

After being diagnosed with endometriosis and polycystic ovaries, Kelly feared motherhood might not happen. She gave birth in November 2023, working “little bits” early on. “Becoming a mum has sharpened my focus on my job. I’ve not lost any ambition.” This will be her fourth major tournament as an England reporter.

Working with Wayne Rooney

Kelly co-hosts The Wayne Rooney Show podcast. “Wayne’s great,” she says. “We record two a week, even during the World Cup. Everyone’s got a good Wayne Rooney story.” She also met his wife Coleen, who was “very kind and supportive.” Guests include David Moyes, James Nelson-Joyce, and Paddy Pimblett.

Career Highlights

Kelly recalls a selfie with Ryan Reynolds, encouraged by Alan Shearer. “I went bright red,” she laughs. Her career highlight is being pitch-side at two England finals. “As a young girl watching England, now asking questions with a front-row seat is special.” She notes progress for female presenters but says more is needed. “We have powerhouse women presenting Match of the Day.”
