Republican National Committee Reinstates Support for Roy Moore Amid Abuse Allegations

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has renewed its support for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct involving minors. The decision came hours after US President Donald Trump formally endorsed Moore, calling on Republicans to back him in the upcoming special election.

The RNC had previously withdrawn its support last month following allegations from seven women, including one who claims Moore molested her when she was 14 while he was in his 30s. Another woman alleges Moore attempted to rape her after offering her a ride home. Moore denies all allegations, labelling them a 'witch hunt'.

The reinstated support allows Moore's campaign to access get-out-the-vote funds. Polling shows Moore with a narrow lead over Democratic opponent Doug Jones ahead of the 12 December election to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Several Senate Republicans who had called for Moore to step aside have softened their stance. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Alabama voters should 'make the call', while Senator John Cornyn expressed support for a congressional ethics probe but declined to criticise Moore further.

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney criticised the move, stating that Moore's presence in the Senate would be a 'stain' on the party. Steve Bannon, former chief strategist to Trump, is scheduled to campaign for Moore on Tuesday.
