Teen Charged in Louisiana Mall Killing, Governor Vows Action

Authorities in Louisiana have charged a 17-year-old with murder following a deadly shooting at a Baton Rouge mall on Thursday that left one teenage girl dead and five others injured. Police are still searching for another suspect believed to be involved in the incident.

Governor Vows to Address Gang Violence

During a news conference on Friday, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced a sweeping crackdown on gang violence, which he said has plagued the capital city. Landry, known for his tough-on-crime stance, stated that he had spoken with FBI Director Kash Patel and pledged to deploy state, local, and federal resources to combat the issue. He emphasized that consequences would be felt immediately.

Landry called on all levels of law enforcement, including the National Guard, FBI, U.S. Department of Justice, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, to prepare for a targeted warrant sweep aimed at anyone connected to the mall shooting. He also indicated that the sweep would focus on the neighborhoods where the suspects originate and would target adults who enable juvenile offenders.

“We are not going to allow our streets, our schools and our public spaces to become your battleground,” Landry said. “Those who brought this violence into our public spaces and into the lives of our ordinary citizens, I want you to know you are now the criminal problem and we are focused on you.”

Details of the Shooting

Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse stated that the shooting appeared to be driven by “social media beefs and maybe gang-related stuff,” though the investigation remains ongoing. He confirmed that the attack was not random, explaining that two groups met at the mall, exchanged words, and then opened fire, striking innocent bystanders.

The chaos unfolded in the food court of the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday afternoon, prompting shoppers and workers to flee or take cover. Morse praised two off-duty officers who were at the mall and rushed toward the gunfire to render aid, actions that likely saved lives. Hundreds of police officers, some in tactical gear and carrying rifles, descended on the scene as helicopters circled above.

Among the injured is a 43-year-old man who remains in critical condition. The deceased victim has been identified as Martha Odom, a 17-year-old high school student from Lafayette. Odom was at the mall with friends for her “senior skip day,” according to The Advocate. Two other students from Ascension Episcopal School, where Odom attended, were also injured. The school described Odom as “a joyful presence whose kindness and infectious enthusiasm brought light to all who knew her.”

Arrest and Charges

Five people were initially taken into custody following the shooting but were later released. On Friday, a 17-year-old suspect turned himself in and was arrested. He has been charged with first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of illegal use of a weapon. Morse noted that the juvenile has an extensive criminal history within the juvenile court system. Under recently enacted Louisiana law, 17-year-olds are treated as adults in criminal proceedings.

Authorities continue to search for another suspect and are asking the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. During the news conference, Landry stated that if it were up to him, the suspects would “spend the rest of their lives” at Louisiana’s notorious Angola state penitentiary.

Recent Gun Violence in Louisiana

This deadly shooting marks the second high-profile case of gun violence in Louisiana this week. Earlier, a father fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own, in an attack on his family that spanned two houses in a Shreveport neighborhood. Two women, including the gunman’s wife, were critically wounded.

Additionally, a mass shooting plot at a festival in Louisiana was thwarted. A former North Carolina law enforcement officer, who authorities say planned to kill Black people in a mass shooting at a major New Orleans festival, was arrested at a Florida hotel with a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
