A 'dangerous' Snapchat predator has been jailed for 14 years for raping a 12-year-old girl and exploiting dozens of others in one of the UK's biggest online child sexual abuse investigations. Stuart Latham, 22, admitted 49 offences involving at least 41 victims, most aged 11 to 13, over the course of a year.
Police found more than 4,000 indecent images on Latham's devices, including over 1,000 category A images, the most serious kind. Detective Sergeant Simon France of Greater Manchester Police described Latham as 'one of the most dangerous offenders' he had encountered in 14 years investigating sexual offences.
Latham posed as a 14-year-old boy named Josh on Snapchat and other social media, sending hundreds of messages to young girls. He quickly steered conversations to request sexual images, sometimes offering money, and threatened to leak images if victims refused. He raped a 12-year-old girl who believed he was 15, buying her sex toys and erotic outfits.
Sentencing Latham at Preston Crown Court, Judge Philip Parry said: 'You are a highly dangerous individual. You are a predatory sex offender with little to no remorse.' The judge noted Latham 'struggled to show any meaningful empathy' and had left 'emotional wreckage' in his wake.
Latham continued his relationship with the 12-year-old while on police bail, later telling officers he 'knew he was already in trouble' and 'couldn't be in a worse situation'. The court heard that one 11-year-old victim was left 'distraught' and 'crying in the corner of her room'.
Detective Sergeant France urged social media companies to implement stricter age verification protocols and called on parents to monitor children's online activity, warning that platforms like Snapchat are a 'hive of activity' for offenders. Greater Manchester Police appealed for other potential victims to come forward.
