Joe Scarborough Questions Melania Trump's Epstein Denial Timing
Scarborough Questions Melania's Epstein Denial Timing

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough voiced significant confusion regarding First Lady Melania Trump's rare public appearance on Thursday, during which she attempted to distance herself from the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Scarborough, the 63-year-old host of Morning Joe, described the timing of Melania's announcement as "strange" and questioned its underlying message as he opened Friday's broadcast.

Scarborough's Bizarre Assessment

The veteran broadcaster called "the idea that [Melania] did not know" and "had no relation" with Epstein "beyond bizarre." He further elaborated, stating, "Secondly, that she would actually pretend that she didn’t know who he was." This commentary was prompted by a clip showing the First Lady, 55, insisting that she and her husband, former President Donald Trump, only attended the same social gatherings as Epstein "from time to time," merely overlapping in social circles.

Context of the Announcement

During her prepared statement, Melania Trump also maintained that a 2002 message to Ghislaine Maxwell—Epstein's only convicted accomplice—"cannot be categorized as anything more than casual correspondence." Scarborough openly wondered whether some revelation was imminent and why the First Lady was "bringing up something that obviously the president doesn't want brought up." He and co-host Mika Brzezinski both scrutinized the timing and content of this sudden announcement.

Interestingly, Melania used her platform to redirect attention toward the plight of Epstein's victims. "We still must work openly and transparently to uncover the truth," she declared, urging Congress to hold a public hearing where victims could testify under oath. Scarborough noted this stance was "just the opposite of what the president has been talking about for months now."

Contrasting Presidential Focus

Scarborough pointed out that merely "a few hours" after Melania's remarks, Donald Trump embarked on a social media posting spree targeting MAGA influencers who have broken with him over military operations in Iran. On Truth Social, Trump singled out figures like Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones, labeling them "stupid people" and "NUT JOBS." Scarborough humorously remarked, "Alex Korson, our EP, said it was like War and Peace - without the peace," referencing the ongoing 42-day Iran war coverage that has largely overshadowed the Epstein case.

White House Reaction and Subpoena Developments

Reporter Jacqueline Alemany informed Scarborough and Brzezinski that Trump claimed he "didn't know anything" about the speech's contents beforehand and abruptly added that "[Melania] didn’t know [Epstein]" before hanging up. Alemany also cited White House officials stating that staffers were blindsided by the speech. Fox News corroborated this, reporting that White House reporters received "no heads up" about the statement, which had been scheduled in advance.

This denial from the First Lady emerged just one day after the Justice Department announced that former Attorney General Pam Bondi would not comply with a subpoena to appear before the House Oversight Committee on April 14. The subpoena concerned her handling of DOJ documents related to Epstein, following bipartisan backlash. Republican Chair Rep. James Comer issued the subpoena after joining Democrats in pledging to investigate the DOJ for its handling of files, including those related to President Trump missing from recent releases.

The DOJ informed the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday that the subpoena for Bondi's closed-door deposition was moot because it sought her testimony in an "official capacity as Attorney General," a position from which she was removed last week. Comer has yet to withdraw the subpoena, maintaining pressure on the administration.
