Savannah Guthrie Quits Today Show Mid-Show Amid Missing Mum Search
Savannah Guthrie Leaves Today Show Early Amid Mum's Disappearance

Savannah Guthrie abruptly left the Today Show mid-filming on Wednesday as the hunt for her missing mother continues. The co-host, who recently returned to her role amid the ongoing mystery of her mother Nancy's disappearance, exited the show after just 90 minutes.

Swift Exit Confirmed by Co-Host

Her quick departure was confirmed by co-host Craig Melvin, who told viewers: "Savannah had to leave a little early today." In an attempt to reassure concerned fans, he added: "She'll be right back tomorrow, though." No further explanation was given, leaving viewers wondering if there had been a development in the case of her missing mother.

However, a source later told Page Six that her exit was "for some sort of appointment, and her exit had nothing to do with her mom."

Viewers Hopeful for Breakthrough

Despite the source's statement, viewers had remained hopeful that it could signal a breakthrough. Among those commenting was NewsNation contributor and retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, who wrote on X: "Savannah Guthrie left the @TODAYshow set this morning after only 90 minutes. Every time she unexpectedly leaves the show, it gives me hope that there may be a break in the case. I guess it could just mean Charlie had to leave school early with the sniffles and Savannah wanted to be with him, but I always hope it means a break. #NancyGuthrie"

Background on Nancy Guthrie's Disappearance

Nancy, 84, has been missing since January. Police believe she was kidnapped from her home in Tucson, Arizona, and continue to search for any perpetrators. Savannah initially took several months off from her role as the search progressed. But weeks after making a desperate plea on social media, she returned to her position on April 6.

At the time, she told viewers it was "good to be home" and added: "Ready or not, let's do the news." During her absence, Savannah's co-stars wore yellow ribbons of support on their lapels.

Television Special and Investigation

In the United States, a TV special on the disappearance of Nancy aired on May 6 on NewsNation. In it, experts explored the possibilities behind what happened to the pensioner. To date, there appear to be no viable clues or suspects. The NewsNation special aired more than a week after a man's trial date was set for creating fake ransom notes concerning Nancy's kidnapping.

Journalist Brian Entin, who has closely followed the case, brought together three criminal profilers for the special. They examined the possible profile of the suspect captured on Nancy Guthrie's front door security camera. Despite the footage being shown worldwide, the man—who has not been named—was seen attempting to break into Nancy's Tucson home while tearing the Nest camera off the front door. He was wearing a ski mask, gloves, and a backpack, and appeared to have a weapon.

Dr. Gary Brucato told the show: "What you're dealing with is somebody with some cruel, sadistic, scheming personality, and you don't develop that kind of personality overnight; you tend to have a long history of being that way... they tend to be cool under pressure like this, but what tends to make them not cool is when there are slights to this ego."
