Rosenior questions Chelsea squad after Brighton loss

Under-pressure Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has issued a scathing critique of his squad following their 3-0 Premier League defeat at Brighton, branding the performance "indefensible" and vowing to identify which players he can trust in difficult moments.

Rosenior’s frank assessment

Speaking after the match at the Amex Stadium, Rosenior acknowledged the frustration of travelling supporters who turned on him during the game. "I understand their frustration. The buck stops with me. I have thick skin and I understand why the fans are frustrated," he said. "I’m frustrated with the performances we’re putting in. I’ve just got to keep working hard with the staff, with the players. But what I do need to do is really look at how we go about games, the personnel of the team, who I can trust and rely on in difficult moments, because not enough players showed that."

The defeat marked Chelsea’s fifth consecutive league loss without scoring—a feat not seen since 1912—and left them seven points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool with a game in hand played. Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood, and Danny Welbeck saw Brighton leapfrog Chelsea into sixth place.

Injury woes and lack of firepower

Without injured attacking trio Cole Palmer, Estevao, and Joao Pedro, Chelsea failed to register a single shot on target. Rosenior warned his squad that they must handle the pressure that comes with representing the club. "If you can’t handle that then you shouldn’t be here. It’s as simple as that," he said. "That’s something that needs to be addressed this week but it also needs to be addressed in the long term."

Defender’s contrasting view

Defender Trevoh Chalobah offered a different perspective, insisting effort was not the issue. "It’s nothing to do with effort. We gave it our all, we just got beat," he told Sky Sports. "We just have to pick ourselves up. We’ve got a semi-final to come. It’s a massive game at Wembley. Us being negative, us dwelling on the past is not going to help the situation."

Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca in January, now faces a crucial FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley on Sunday, with his future at the club under increasing scrutiny.
