In a recent episode of the BBC's 'The Repair Shop', painting conservator Lucia Scalisi shared a deeply personal story about losing friends to HIV. Scalisi, who has over 30 years of experience, spoke about the impact of the AIDS crisis on her life and career.
While working on a damaged portrait, Scalisi reflected on the parallels between restoring art and preserving memories. She noted that the loss of friends to HIV taught her the importance of cherishing every moment and the stories behind treasured items.
The episode also featured wood restorer William Kirk and horologist Steven Fletcher repairing a unique walking stick with a moving monkey head, originally a gift from an Indian Maharaja. Antique photography specialist Brenton West restored a seaside telescope, evoking childhood memories for its owner.
Scalisi's candid revelation highlighted the often-unseen emotional depth behind the show's restoration work. 'The Repair Shop' continues to air on BBC One, blending craftsmanship with heartfelt human stories.
