Piers Morgan has criticised Stephen Colbert following the cancellation of The Late Show, predicting that more US late-night hosts will face similar fates. The British broadcaster described most hosts as “hyper-partisan activist hacks” for the Democratic Party.
Morgan reacted to a New York Post cover highlighting Colbert’s left-leaning guest list since 2022, writing on Sunday: “This is so damning. Most of America’s biggest late-night hosts have become nothing more than hyper-partisan activist hacks for the Democrats – a party that’s rarely been more unpopular. No wonder Colbert got canned. More will follow.”
The 60-year-old also agreed with comments from former late-night legend Jay Leno, who criticised the political nature of modern talk shows. Leno told the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation: “Why shoot for just half an audience all the time? Why not try to get the whole?”
Morgan later targeted John Oliver after watching a 60 Minutes interview, accusing him of “partisan political activism” for telling viewers not to vote for Donald Trump. Colbert’s show was axed by CBS earlier this month, officially due to financial reasons, but supporters question the timing after Paramount settled a lawsuit with Trump for $16m.
Trump gloated on social media: “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next.”
