Gemma Atkinson has shared further details about her daughter Mia's epilepsy diagnosis, describing it as a 'scary' time but confirming the child is now thriving. The TV presenter and former actress, who has two children with Strictly Come Dancing professional Gorka Marquez, revealed on her podcast that Mia had been experiencing absence seizures.
In a new Instagram Story, Atkinson clarified the timeline, stating that the diagnosis was made almost 18 months ago and that Mia is now 'absolutely fine'. She said: 'To put this into context, Mia's diagnosis was something we dealt with privately almost 18 months ago. This isn't recent and I'm pleased to say she's now absolutely fine. She's thriving and doing everything in life she wants to do.'
Atkinson had previously spoken on her podcast 'Just As Well, The Women's Health Podcast' about Mia's loss of awareness and zoning out, which led to the epilepsy diagnosis. She explained that after a year, the absence seizures have 'gotten so much better'. A doctor recommended a keto diet, which Atkinson said helped rewire brain function, and she noted that Mia has had no seizures in the last six months.
Addressing well-wishers, Atkinson added: '18 months ago it was a scary time and to any other families who have been through or are currently going through similar I truly understand how you feel. There is light at the end of the tunnel though. Many children grow out of absence seizures, just like Mia has & they can live a very normal life, so stay positive.'
