Peter Falconio's Mother Pleads for Body Discovery 25 Years On

The mother of murdered British backpacker Peter Falconio has made an emotional plea for information leading to the discovery of his body, as the 25th anniversary of his death approaches. Joan Falconio expressed hope that she and her husband would find their son's remains in their lifetime, saying she fears the case has been forgotten.

Peter Falconio vanished on July 14, 2001, while travelling with girlfriend Joanne Lees on the Stuart Highway in Australia's Northern Territory. His killer, Bradley John Murdoch, died last July from throat cancer without ever revealing the location of the body, despite being convicted of murder in 2005.

Northern Territory Police have vowed to continue searching for Falconio's remains, but Mrs Falconio said she has not heard from them in over a year. A police spokesman expressed regret that Murdoch died without disclosing the burial site and urged anyone with information to come forward, noting that a £250,000 reward remains available.

Murdoch tricked the couple into stopping their campervan late at night, then shot Falconio in the head. Lees managed to escape after being bound with cable ties. Murdoch always denied the murder and never revealed where he disposed of the body.
