New York City's First Lady Confronts Past Social Media Controversy

Rama Duwaji, the 28-year-old wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has issued a formal apology nearly one month after a tabloid publication exposed a series of offensive social media posts from her teenage and early adult years. The apology comes in response to a detailed report by the Washington Free Beacon, which used facial recognition software to link Duwaji to accounts on X and Tumblr containing inappropriate content.

Duwaji's Statement of Regret and Accountability

In an interview with Hyperallergic, Duwaji expressed deep remorse for her past actions. 'When a tabloid recently published old tweets I wrote as a teenager, I felt a lot of shame being confronted with language I used that is so harmful to others; being 15 doesn’t excuse it,' she stated. 'I’ve read and seen a lot of what others have had to say in response, and I understand the hurt I caused and am truly sorry.' Her apology specifically addresses the hurt caused by her previous online behavior, though a spokesperson for Duwaji declined to comment to the New York Times regarding which exact content she was apologizing for.

Detailed Examination of Offensive Content

The Washington Free Beacon's investigation, published on March 18, revealed multiple instances of troubling posts attributed to Duwaji:

  • In 2013, a tweet containing a racial slur directed at a friend, reading: 'Helllll yeah, n****. Super duper genius* excuse you.'
  • That same year, another post referred to new followers using an apparent homophobic slur: 'Whyyyyyy are all these fgts folllowing [sic] meeeeeeeee.'
  • In 2017, a Tumblr account linked to Duwaji reposted an image of plane hijacker Leila Khaled with a quote about accepting death for a cause.
  • The account also praised members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), of which Khaled was a longtime member.
  • Additional content blamed the creation of Al-Qaeda on white people and criticized US troops, accusing them of 'mercilessly slaughtering third world civilians to maintain American hegemony.'

When searched by the Daily Mail, the content appeared to have been deleted from the accounts in question.

Broader Context of Recent Controversies

This discovery follows closely on the heels of another social media controversy involving Duwaji. She recently made headlines for liking posts that celebrated the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, which resulted in nearly 1,200 deaths. One liked post called reports of sexual violence a 'mass rape hoax,' while another included images of a bulldozer used by Hamas to break through into Israel, captioned with 'Breaking the walls of apartheid and military occupation.'

Mayor Mamdani faced questioning about his wife's social media activity but defended her privacy, stating: 'My wife is the love of my life, and she is also a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall.' He avoided direct answers regarding her support for the October 7 attack posts.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Rama Duwaji for further comment on these matters, but no additional statements have been provided at this time.
