Kelly Cates on World Cup concerns and the 'nepo baby' label

BBC presenter Kelly Cates has spoken about the challenges facing the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, including political tensions, high costs, and the influence of Donald Trump. Cates, who will host coverage for BBC television and Radio 5 Live, acknowledged concerns about the tournament's atmosphere and accessibility.

“Before every tournament there are always concerns,” Cates said. “This time I worry about the humidity and the altitude for the players and there are political concerns, obviously. There are also concerns that it’s not going to feel like a World Cup.” She noted that American organisers may see the changes as improvements, while traditionalists question altering a beloved event.

Cates addressed the issue of sportswashing, suggesting that fans focus on the football rather than the host nation. “I don’t think people watched the Qatar World Cup and thought: ‘I really want to go to Doha,’” she said. On Trump’s potential involvement, she commented: “He will want to be front and centre. But I’m not sure that has the knock-on effect he will hope for.”

The presenter also highlighted the financial and logistical barriers for fans, criticising the high ticket and travel prices. “The American sporting experience means they don’t understand why you wouldn’t pay premium prices,” she said. “You don’t get the full World Cup experience unless the fans can afford to get there.”

Despite her concerns, Cates expressed excitement about the tournament, particularly the half-time show featuring Madonna. “I’m giddy about the fact they’ve decided to put Madonna on at half-time,” she said. She also reflected on her career, including the recent axing of Football Focus, and addressed being labelled a 'nepo baby' due to her father, Kenny Dalglish, saying she focuses on her own work.
