IBF Clears Usyk for Verhoeven Fight with Conditions

The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has confirmed it will recognise Oleksandr Usyk's upcoming bout against Rico Verhoeven as a legitimate title defence, but only if the Ukrainian wins. Should Verhoeven pull off an upset, the IBF heavyweight championship will become vacant rather than be awarded to the Dutchman.

The IBF's stance mirrors that of the World Boxing Association (WBA), which has also stated its title will not be at stake for Verhoeven. Meanwhile, the World Boxing Council (WBC) is the only major governing body to fully sanction the fight as an official heavyweight world title match, meaning Verhoeven could claim the green-and-gold belt if he wins.

The bout, taking place at the Giza Necropolis on May 23, has drawn criticism from boxing purists who argue that Usyk should instead face legitimate contenders like WBC interim champion Agit Kabayel. Ring Magazine has also declined to put its championship on the line, reinforcing the event's status as a crossover attraction.

To commemorate the spectacle, the WBC has created a custom 'King of the Nile' belt adorned with ancient Egyptian symbols. The main card will be broadcast live on DAZN pay-per-view from 7pm BST, with ringwalks expected around 10:30pm.
