The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, a longstanding Washington tradition, was dramatically interrupted on Saturday night when a gunman attempted to breach the hotel ballroom where President Donald Trump and Cabinet secretaries were gathered. The president and attendees were evacuated unharmed, and the suspect was taken into custody.
A Night of Tension Turns Chaotic
The dinner is an annual event where journalists and politicians mingle, often amid underlying tension. This year, given President Trump’s contentious relationship with the media, the atmosphere was particularly charged. Trump had boycotted previous dinners, and he had prepared sharp remarks for the event. “I was really ready to rip it,” he said later at the White House.
As guests enjoyed a spring pea and burrata salad and awaited a main course of chateaubriand and Maine lobster, the mood shifted abruptly. Security officials shouted “Shots fired,” causing panic. Attendees ducked under tables, knocking over settings. Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., recalled, “I heard a pop, but we didn’t know what the hell it was. Then the Secret Service came flooding in, and everybody went down.”
Trump and VIPs Evacuated
On stage, mentalist Oz Pearlman was performing a trick for Trump when shots rang out. Trump initially wondered if it was a dropped tray. “I was hoping it was a tray,” he said. “But it wasn’t.” Secret Service agents flooded the stage, shielding Trump and first lady Melania Trump behind armored plating. Vice President JD Vance was pulled off stage first, followed by the Trumps, who were escorted to a secure suite. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and senior aides Stephen Miller and Dan Scavino were also evacuated.
Some guests attempted a “U.S.A.” chant but were shushed. Erika Kirk, widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, was seen in tears as she left. Despite the chaos, it quickly became clear there were no serious injuries in the ballroom.
The Suspect and Security Response
Police identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. He allegedly carried a shotgun, a handgun, and knives, storming the lobby past barricades. Secret Service agents tackled him, and he was taken into custody. One officer was shot in a bullet-resistant vest but was recovering. The suspect was being evaluated at a hospital.
Guests fled through hallways to emergency exits, walking blocks past police vehicles and helicopters. The Washington Hilton, where the event was held, has been a secure site since the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.
Event Rescheduled
Trump wanted the dinner to continue once security was restored, but he deferred to protocols. The event will be rescheduled within 30 days. Late at the White House, Trump reflected, “When you’re impactful, they go after you. I’m not a basket case.” He added, “I see so many tuxedos and beautiful dresses. It was a little different evening than we thought. But we’re going to do it again.”
